A surprise is that Leeds United, facing financial melt-down, appear in 16th place on the list after earning £61.41 million. They feature based on income, although trading in their shares has been suspended, the threat of administration remains and their debts amount to an estimated £100 million. Leeds occupied 11th place on the previous year's list.

Cuts Promised At Leeds

03/22/2004. New Leeds United chairman Gerald Krasner promised that from now on the club would live within their means.

Outlining the new s limline Leeds, he refused to give any guarantees about the futures of certain individuals.

"We've gone through the players to consider values, and when we know our status we will consider our sales strategy," he said.

"But players will not disappear for zero. We will not be forced sellers.

"We will keep it to a minimum depending on our status next season."

New board member Peter Lorimer said: "We've got to look forward and I'm looking forward to building broken bridges. There's been a massive let-down to the fans. They've been told a lot of mis-truths.

"You can rest assured that will not happen in the future. We will try as hard as we can to make sure that never happens again."

Krasner said speculation about Eddie Gray's immediate position was pointless, and that the caretaker manager's role would be reviewed at the end of the season.

"At the end of the season, depending upon which league we will be playing in come August, there will be such issues as coaching qualifications to take into account."

Lorimer praised the new board, despite criticism from some quarters.

"I was totally convinced that these people want the club to be in existence. And to have someone like myself, with 40 years' knowledge - I think I will be a great link.

"If someone like me had been here sooner we may not have got in this sort of trouble in the first place. I can help the board move forward."
