O'Leary Insists He Is Not To Blame For Leeds Fiasco
Blame lies in the boardroom
02/09/2004. Former Leeds United boss David O'Leary has insisted he is not to blame for the financial crisis the Yorkshire club now finds itself in.
O'Leary spent heavily during his time at Elland road, during which he guided them to the semi-finals of the Champions League, but he is adamant that it isn't his fault.
He has stressed he only recommended the players for the club to buy and played no part in contract negotiations, while adds that he is bewildered at how the club now find themselves £80m in debt.
Leeds are three points adrift at the bottom of the table and were beaten by O'Leary's Aston Villa at the weekend.
"Let me tell you, the Leeds United manager at the time did not go in and tie up the chairman and demand that someone was signed," explained O'Leary.
"It didn't happen like that. They set the agenda. I have got the same agenda here at Aston Villa. I recommend, then it is up to the board.
"You would think that, with Allan Leighton overseeing Peter Ridsdale, we would have been all right. Did I negotiate a single contract? No. I nominated the players and they signed them.
"At Leeds, they structured all the money, not me. I would love to have someone answer a lot of questions.
"We had record gates, record sponsorships, cheques from the Champions League and the Uefa Cup semi-finals and I am just amazed at where it has all gone."
